Frederick Wildman 2012 Burgundy Barrel Tasting

Temperatures rose quickly in the tent at the Hotel Vitale’s Americano Restaurant last month, and not just because of the unseasonably warm San Francisco weather. Women were swooning over the charming, dapper and very flirtatious Monsieur Patrick Leflaive, of Olivier Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet. Members of the wine trade were invited by importer Frederick Wildman to taste barrel samples of the not yet released 2012 wines from Burgundy, France.

Together, brothers Patrick and Olivier produce thousands of cases of high quality red and white Burgundy each year. Their chalky, powerful 2012 Leflaive Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru $155 was stunning, while the more moderately priced and silky 2012 Leflaive Rully Les Cloux 1er Cru $32 is a terrific pick for Somms to price under $100 on their wine lists. Martin Sinkoff, Wildman’s Director of Marketing, said, “the market for Burgundy is strong world-wide. That, and low yields in 2011, 2012, and 2013 means that there is price pressure on this vintage.”

Etienne Sauzet, who normally produces ten barrels of Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres 1er Cru $120, will only produce two in 2012. (Note: Etienne Sauzet wines are imported by Vineyard Brands). Jancis Robinson MW called the 2012 vintage “one of the most challenging in recent memory, with frost, hail, storms, rain, sunburn, mildew, and in some cases, rot.” “In 2012 we had hail, frost, and too much rain. On July 3rd, a 20-minute hail storm did major damage. We lost 50% of the crop. In Volnay and Pommard, up to 80% of the crops were lost” said Monsieur Leflaive. “Whites did better. We are pleased, almost.”

Thankfully a warm and sunny summer saved the day, concentrating the remaining fruit and helping it to ripen. Folks shopping for 2012’s need to remember to shop selectively. Whites from the Cote de Beaune offered a rich, creamy mouthfeel if not so much minerality, and Cote de Nuit reds are showing a glossy, silky texture as well. The wines are not as balanced as usual, but offer immediate drinking pleasure. Antoine Vincent of Chateau Fuisse and J. J. Vincent Selections, whose 2012 “J. J.” Bourgogne Blanc $18 was a notable value, said, “the difficulty is always in the vineyard. We had 30% less this year but it had nice concentration. We want balance and power, so we stopped malolactic conversion early to preserve freshness.” The 2012 Chateau Fuisse Pouilly-Fuisse “Marie Antoinette” $24 was another stunning value, and had a gorgeous smoky minerality.

Domaine Armand Rousseau showed four wines from their old vine parcels in Chambertin, a taut, earthy Gevrey-Chambertin, an elegant, silky and perfumed Gevrey-Chambertin “Lavaut St. Jacques” 1er Cru, the Ruchottes-Chambertin “Le Clos des Ruchottes” Grand Cru Monopole, and the Chambertin Grand Cru. The stunning Grand Crus were showing just a hint of what they would become in the decades ahead. Pricing was not yet available, which was probably a good thing.

Stephane Aviron’s Beaujolais-Villages and cru Beaujolais wines, including the gorgeous, dark-berried and smoky 2012 Morgon “Cote du Py” Vielles Vignes $24 commented, “2012 was a correct vintage with a lot of rain, mildew, and a late harvest, so not very good to make a great wine, and they will have a shorter life span.” Why is vintage so important in Burgundy? Does the producer matter more than the appellation/quality level?

Valentine's Day Wines

Here comes Cupid, but in case his arrows don't hit the target, here are a few selections that should get the job done.

Sparkling

 - Cavicchioli 1928 Sparkling Lo Spumante Sorbara DOC Italy $14

This sweet sparkling white Lambrusco, made with 100% Malvasia, is floral, perfumed, and delicate with notes of peach and apricot.

 - Korbel Sweet Rose Sparkling Wine California $13

Inviting notes of cherry, strawberry, raspberry and watermelon and a sweet - tart freshness give this wine great appeal. It is made from a blend of Pinot Noir, Gamay, Zinfandel and Sangiovese.

 - NV Veuve Clicquot Brut Rose Champagne France $70

Very dry, crisp, minerally and delicately fruity, this Pinot Noir-based Champagne is very refined, elegant and subtle, but don't let that fool you. It is very powerful as well.

White

 - 2011 Edict Proprietary White Wine Napa Valley California $26

This lively, luscious blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay and Viognier has notes of quince, lemon drop, chalk, jasmine, carnation, chamomile, honey, and banana pudding. With sweet and tart notes, like a bite of fresh pineapple, the wine is both satisfying and refreshing.

 - 2012 Olivier Leflaive Meursault "Poruzots" 1er Cru Burgundy France $95
Wines from Burgundy, both red and white, are said to be the quintessential wines of seduction. This smoky, sexy Chardonnay is both decadent and restrained, like a ballet dancer letting loose.

Red

 - 2012 St. Amant Old Vine Zinfandel Mohr-Fry Ranch Lodi California  $18
Warm and inviting with notes of black cherry, Dr. Pepper, red apple skin, Red Devil cake, mulberry, blackberry, and a sweet red rose perfume. It is full, round, fruity, soft, creamy, powerful, and rich with dry, earthy chocolate, vanilla, cedar, and toasty oak notes complementing the intense core of berry fruit.

 - 2011 Fore Family Vineyards GSM Red Hills AVA Lake County California $30

With sultry red berry fruit, dark chocolate, black licorice and spice, this is Valentine's Day in a bottle! Velvety and intense but with that beautiful natural Lake County acidity for balance, this blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre is a slam dunk for you and your sweetie.

- 2004 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC Italy $100

There is nothing better than snuggling up to a cozy fire with your loved one and a glass of Amarone. With deep, spicy fruit and earth notes, a soft, opulent texture, and a long chocolate cherry and raisin finish, this is definitely a wine of "meditazione" and romance.

Republic of Tea Launches Ron Rubin Pinot Noir

Grown in Green Valley’s signature Goldridge soil, which naturally stresses the vines and brings balance,  the classy 2012 Ron Rubin Pinot Noir Green Valley of Russian River Valley $35 is clean and delicate with notes of wild strawberry, cherry, yellow apple, orange rind, root beer, dried sage, crushed fall leaves, leather, lavender and white rose.

On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, delicately structured, and very silky. A rich burst of bing cherry and watermelon rind is followed by notes of tobacco, earth, and white mushroom. The oak is subtle and tannins are fine and seamlessly integrated. The finish is long with notes of cherry and sarsaparilla. Gentle acidity leaves the palate refreshed.

This cool climate Pinot Noir is like a fine young Chambolle Musigny – delicate, elegant, feminine, and slightly earthy.

SOMMS vs WINEMAKERS Slug it out to Select Best Zin Glass

On a warmer-than-in-summer winter's day here in the Bay area, a group of sommeliers and winemakers were invited to take a line up of 15 Riedel stems and go through a series of eliminations to select the winning glass shape and size for Zinfandel. This was the kick-off event for this year's ZAP, the annual festival celebrating Zinfandel, and was held at Rock Wall Winery in Alameda with owner Kent and Shauna Rosenblum in attendance.

Glassware impresario Georg Riedel kept us in line as we first eliminated 8 glasses (not too hard - the big, fat bowls or those with triangular bottoms pushed out alcohol fumes), and then another 4 - and then finally down to one favorite. With each round, we poured a different Zin so as to further democratize the process. Georg didn't want esoteric palates influencing the selection. He wanted what would work best as a mainstream Zinfandel glass.

Finally, when the results were tabulated, the winning glass was number 14, a smaller Bordeaux shape that accentuated the gorgeous chocolate and berry notes of these luscious Zins but that didn't push out so much heat - Zins were on average hovering around 15% abv. One notable exception was Eric Baugher's Ridge Geyserville at 14.5% which also was a very different animal from the fruity-liscious styles that are so commonplace these days.

Also of great interest was glass number 3, a $3 wholesale "Degustazione" Red which was big-bowled in a hybrid of Bordeaux and Burgundy shapes but quite thin and delicate at this price.

Wine and Cheese for New Year's Eve

Yes, toasting at midnight is a must, but what about all the hours before hand, or wines for football the following day? Here are a few of my picks, along with friendly cheese suggestions from Kerrygold Natural Irish Cheese. Almonds are good to offer as well - ancient Romans nibbled on them to prevent intoxication.

Stylish Italian  -
Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco Superiore Valdobiaddene $20
Friendly cheese: Kerrygold Dubliner - a robust, aged cow’s milk with flavors ranging from nutty to sharp to sweet.

Classic French
Chateau de Sancerre Blanc Loire Valley $29
Understated and intense – like an unwavering gaze from behind thick glasses. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc has notes of pink grapefruit, chalk, dried sage and lemon.
Friendly cheese: Kerrygold Reserve Cheddar - an extra year of aging brings out its concentrated flavors.

Dreamy Californian
Terlato Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio Russian River Valley $16
Clean, round, honeyed and slightly nutty, this is richer than Sauvignon Blanc but lighter than Chardonnay.
Friendly cheese: Kerrygold Red Leicester - mellow cow’s milk cheese with a tangy finish.

Austrian Aphrodisiac
Kracher Beerenauslese Burgenland Austria $39 375ml
One of the world’s finest sweet wines from from the great Kracher estate in Austria, this decadent blend of Chardonnay and Welschriesling is richly perfumed, seductive, intensely sweet, and appropriate for pairing with cheese, desserts, or your lover.

Friendly cheese: Kerrygold Aged Cheddar with Irish Whiskey - nutty, smooth, whiskey-infused aged cheddar.
